Decide What Happens to a Product

Last updated

When a review is done, the item is still sitting in your house. A Disposition records what you did with it, and what it was worth: what it sold for, or the value of a donation for your taxes. Every Product gets exactly one.

The Six Choices

  • Keep: you’re keeping it.
  • Sell: you’re reselling it. Track your listings and record the sale.
  • Donate: you’re giving it to a charity. Record the value and keep the tax receipt.
  • Gift: you’re giving it to a person.
  • Paid in Kind: you’re handing it over to someone as payment.
  • Junk: it’s trashed, recycled or destroyed.

Choose One

You can decide at any point:

  • When you add the Product, with Planned Disposition. Leave it on Decide Later if you’re not sure.
  • On the Product’s page, on its Disposition tab.
  • On the Dispositions page in the side menu. Finished Products with no decision wait there under Unassigned, each with an Assign button.

Keep and Junk are done the moment you choose them. Sell, Donate, Gift and Paid in Kind need one more step, recording the sale or the hand-over, and that opens once the Product’s Workflow is finished. Until then the Product shows as earmarked, for example “Earmarked as To Sell”.

Good to know: the Dispositions page only lists Products whose Workflow is finished. A Product you’re still working on shows up there once it’s done.

Selling It

  1. On the Product’s Disposition tab, choose Sell.
  2. When you list it somewhere, click Add Listing: the Platform (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and so on), your Listing Price, and the day you listed it. Add one Listing per marketplace.
  3. If you drop the price while negotiating, edit the Listing and change its Current Price. Tuskl keeps your original ask, so you can see later how far below it things sell.
  4. When it sells, click Mark Sold and enter the Sale Price, the Selling Fees the marketplace took, and the Date Sold. Pick the Listing it sold from, or Sold Offline / Not From a Listing. Tuskl shows your Net Proceeds as you type.

If it was listed in more than one place, Tuskl offers to mark the other Listings as delisted. That only updates Tuskl; remember to take them down on each marketplace too.

Good to know: leave Selling Fees blank if you don’t know them. Enter 0 only if the marketplace really took nothing.

Donating It

Choose Donate, then, once the Workflow is finished, record the Charity or Organization, the Donation Value and the date, and click Mark Donated. The value starts as the Product’s Price, or its Fair Market Value if there’s no Price; change it if needed. Attach the charity’s Tax Receipt (an image or PDF, up to 10 MB) so it’s there at tax time.

Gifting It, or Paying in Kind

Choose Gift or Paid in Kind, then record the Recipient, the item’s Fair-Market Value at the time, and the date, and click Mark Complete.

Changing Your Mind

  • Change Disposition replaces the current choice and starts over. It clears what you’d recorded, including an attached tax receipt, even if you pick the same option again. Download the receipt first if you need it.
  • Clear removes the decision and sends the Product back to Unassigned.

Reminders

Tuskl’s Friday Loose Ends email lists finished Products that still need a decision, items marked to sell that haven’t been listed after a week, and Listings that haven’t sold after a month. Items marked to sell but not listed also show on your dashboard.
